mmkay. Let's get down to business. Welcome Art and Soul folks. Isn't Shelly awesome? Here's some of the collages I mention in the interview:
March 2007 work.
August 2007 work.
Amazing how revealing this stuff is. There's more, I just haven't photographed them and posted them yet. Sheer laziness. Plus, part of my portfolio isn't working properly. Eh, these things happen.
Moving on. The last few days have been a glorious whirlwind of meetings, emails, and generally fabulous fun. Paul's birthday was Saturday and part of my present to him was to not open my computer for the whole day. And I didn't! Instead we hung out with the kids and later in the afternoon I sent him off to the junk yard to go exploring old cars while the kids and I made him a cake. Then it was off to see Greendale! It was my first time since it opened early April. If you can possibly go, please go. It's the coolest thing I've seen in a long time and I don't even care for Neil Young (shocking). Not even so much for the content, but for the sheet bizarreness of a theatrical presentation of a rock album with a plot. The band totally rocked the house and I especially loved how the music is a character in the piece. They'll be going to NY in July. Awesome.
Life is really good right now. Lots of beautiful things are present. Hope it's well with you and yours. Peace, everybody.

THINK
i was on tv for the first time yesterday - to speak about la reunion. i wasn't nervous at all until i was in the green room watching the live taping of mayor laura miller and it occurred to me that i was about to have to go do that...! and then i instantly started sweating even though it was freeeezing in that little waiting room. in hindsight i suppose i wish i'd responded slightly differently to questions. and worn an outfit with a lapel. and not bumbled some words. and dropped the la reunion website into the dialogue. alas. it is what it is. and it was a great opportunity.
link. fastforward to about 19 minutes into the video for the segment featuring la reunion.

Illustrating the Theater
By Jennifer Medina
Here's one more reason to eschew the cineplex down the street: The Magnolia Bar Gallery (located inside the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village) is putting the art back into the art house theater. In an attempt to bring more attention to the regional art scene, the Magnolia Bar Gallery offers exhibitions from local artists such as Vladimir Zimakov, a 1996 graduate of Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet, who presents Musicians and Inventors: The Beginning, a new collection of paintings. Russian-born Zimakov has a special knack for illustrations, which have donned the covers of everything from books and magazines to CDs. His interest in publication design is one rarely seen these days, making his work all the more interesting and accessible. (Picture a pen-and-ink Edward Gorey illustration fusing with Kafka and you'll begin to understand.) Next time you go see a movie at the Magnolia, get there early, because there's more to a theater lobby than giant cardboard cut-outs of Tom Hanks. The Musicians and Inventors: The Beginning reception is June 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and all art will be on view through July 27 during regular theater hours at the Magnolia Bar Gallery,3699 McKinney Ave. Call 214-764-9106 or visit vladimirzimakov.com.

Brock Rizy and David Hopkins on Unfair Park
david hopkins and brock rizy on unfair park. here's the original link.
and the part that mentions them:
"In fact, BenBella’s pop-culture library has proven so successful Yeffeth’s company has launched an imprint called Smart Pop, which includes some 30 books ranging in subject from King Kong to Star Wars to The Simpsons; if something’s got its own DVD boxed set, BenBella has a book to go with it. But, I gotta say, these books aren’t just dork-lit: “They’re very accessible,” says David Hopkins, the Arlington-based comic book writer who does in fact have a wife and a very adorable daughter. Hopkins and illustrator Brock Rizy have a new book, the astounding Emily Edison, due in stores June 28 (but more about that in coming weeks). Hopkins also contributed an essay to BenBella’s new book The Man from Krypton: A Closer Look at Superman; his is titled “A History of Violence,” and it reads like a smart-ass National Public Radio commentary in which he chronicles Superman’s murderous early days with his later tendencies to punch out…uh, snowmen wearing top hats.
“It’s not super-academeic, but it’s not talking down to you,” Hopkins says of the publishing house’s titles. “Most people with a decent college education would get what’s going on in the books… They have this really nice niche. There may be other publishers doing it, but I haven’t seen it. My wife was big into the Pride and Prejudice book they did [Flirting with Pride and Prejudice: Fresh Perspectives on the Original Chick-Lit Masterpiece, published last September]. She read it cover to cover and loved it.” Hopkins is also finishing an essay for an upcoming Spider-man book of essays; I’d call him a dork, but I think he’s just about the coolest guy in the whole wide world." –Robert Wilonsky
yay for david and brock getting a little more press! (brock's work comes down from the magnolia tonight and up goes vladimir's.)

did i mention already i'm mortified by the name 'team evil'
my FOB (father-of-baby) has a gig at bar of soap friday night. i'll be there after i ring-master the magnolia. i'm stoked because i haven't seen paul play live since course of empire days. what fun! they're opening for black heart society and the tah-dahs. it's sure to be an entertaining evening.
here's a tiny little blurb in the observer this week in mr sam machovech's column:
"Course of Empire's Paul Semrad recently hipped us to his latest band, Team Evil, and the straight-out southern-rockers on the trio's MySpace page are pretty bitchin'. See the band open for the Tah Dahs at the Bar of Soap on Friday."
yeah, we're all a little confused by the 'southern rocker' label. but whatever... it's better than what they really are: drunk rock. not that they're drunks. but you know... nevermind.

Unused Paintings
George Lacy's work is all new
By Andrea Grimes
Art is all about coming up with something new with which to excite the imagination of one's audience. Thus, you'll have to forgive me if my mind is less than stimulated by an art exhibit titled New Paintings. I guess it's better than Paintings, Slightly Worn, but in VG Condition. Luckily, local artist George Lacy's uninventively titled showing is being put on by the Pigeon-Stone Project, which has a pretty cool name, even if it is likely to raise some eyebrows over at PETA. (Whatever, pigeons are annoying. Chunk those stones hard, kids.) Lacy says his paintings are about the "mystery of life as I experience it," if that's esoteric enough for you. The work is on display for free, Thursday through April 19 during regular theater hours at the Magnolia Theatre, 3699 McKinney Ave.
thank you dallas observer for the press. and come ya'll. it's my last official pigeon-stone project gig, although i'll still be curating the space, it just won't be PSP anymore. kah-raze-ee. RECEPTION 3.10.06 from 6:30 to 8:30.

moving on, band lineup for the art conspiracy is almost final.... i think. i mean, it is. here it is: the happy bullets, the theatre fire, pleasant grove, and salim nourallah. FYI: i still need artists and volunteers.... so call me. email me. anything.
the november issue of modern luxury came out yesterday. um, yeah, there's a huge article about pigeon-stone project. after searching and searching online, i couldn't find a repro of the article anywhere on the site. and because i have little to no shame what-so-ever, i may actually scan it and post it here. **interesting disclaimer: i actually used the word 'pedigree' and was quoted saying so. for the record, i'm mortified.

Pigeon-Stone Project
www.pigeonstoneproject.com
You can't fling a paintbrush/film canister/chisel/flashcard/pencil/found object in this town without hitting an artist. They're sketching at White Rock, shooting Deep Ellum in gritty black and white and wandering downtown, picking up lost Post-It notes and other detritus for assemblages. For most, the biggest opening reception their art will see is when they pop the top on a Bud Light after hanging their latest masterpiece over the couch. But if they're lucky, they'll catch the discerning but unpretentious eyes of Sarah Jane Semrad and Nyddia Hannah of Pigeon-Stone Project, which gives local artists and curators opportunities to show off their work in public by giving local businesses new, innovative local art to display. The duo currently books exhibits--with receptions and everything--in the Continental Lofts, the bar at the Magnolia Theater, Sozo Salon on Knox-Henderson, Zeo Salon on Travis Walk, Two Sisters Catering in Deep Ellum, Counter Culture at Mockingbird Station and the Elbow Room near Baylor Hospital on the edge of Deep Ellum. But look for them to expand to every nook and cranny with enough blank wall space to accommodate a piece or two.
i'm kinda giddy. this is very exciting.

Pigeon-Stone Project in the Dallas Observer
wahoo! read full story here.
and the part about us specifically below:
There's an up-and-up ending to this chapter of pared-down art life in the city. And it comes in the form of the Pigeon-Stone Project and the newly reopened Plush Gallery. Run by the girl-power twosome of Sarah Jane Semrad and Nyddia Hannah, Pigeon-Stone Project is a consortium of "do-it-yourself" galleries. The Project collectively manages seven spaces: Continental Gallery and Elbow Room in Deep Ellum, Magnolia Bar in West Village, Sozo Salon on Knox-Henderson, Zeo Salon in Travis Walk, Two Sisters Catering in Deep Ellum and Counter Culture at Mockingbird Station. In many ways, they have realized in three dimensions what's been going on for years in the Internet world. Semrad and Hannah have wisely taken advantage of surplus corners of the overall marketplace, spinning money and offering opportunities for young artists, mostly from Texas, through the interstitial spaces of capital. Offering their curatorial services in the corridors, stairwells and on the surrounding walls of hip coffee shops, rehabbed loft buildings and trendy cinemas, they promise to provide publicity and a constant stream of cool people to proprietors in exchange for little or no rent.
Object, a small exhibition of photographs by Kevin Todora, is showing at Continental Gallery, located in the ground-level hallway of the Continental Loft building. Equal parts neo-appropriationist à la Sherrie Levine and sheer voyeurism, Todora's re-photographs show the faces of women in the buff and men from liquor and cigarette advertisements from old porn magazines. Shown in groups of four, the photographs offer a quiet standoff of luridly askew and piercingly mannish gazes. "Amy," "Sarah," "Angela" and "Amanda" all show willowy, impressionistic views of rouge-faced women in ecstasy. While all of the women look out to the sides with eyes rolled back in the middle of apoplectic pleasure, the male eyes of "Michael," "Christopher," "Jason" and "David" glare grinningly straight at you. For Todora, these images are also an investigation into porn-world demographics, in that the salacious eyes of the men we see are but the idealized version of those who purchased the mags at the get-go. Horny is as horny does.
