More BitterSweet Chatter + Post-Installation Interview Pic
As executive director of the LRTX project, it’s sometimes a time sensitive challenge to step outside and do something else. Occasionally, I’ll participate on a panel discussion, a jury, or donate some of my own work to a worthy cause. And every once in a while I will guest curate a space or cause an independent art show to arise out of an old warehouse or some other non-traditional space. (think Nancy, George and Bess; Primer; Art for Peace and Justice etc) One such case happens this Thursday evening, April 24 from 6pm-9pm, at the Magnolia Theatre (www.westvil.com for directions).
The bar upstairs in the Magnolia has a lovely art space with locally grown artists showing their work through the efforts of independent curators Scott and Nicole Horn. In fact, showing other people’s work at the Magnolia was how I got my start – before my gallery, before Pigeon-Stone Project. I passed the baton to the Horns ages ago and they’ve done a great job selecting cool work for exhibits. The Horns got hitched over the weekend and they asked me to guest curate an exhibit using the work of an artist of my choosing. After careful deliberation and considering all artists I have worked with over the years, the artist I chose is Benjamin Hancock.
Ben’s work is paint on stained wooden panels, but with an intricate process of digital and traditional lurking beneath. His high contrast panels depict incredibly nostalgic scenes that resonate with children of the 80’s. Dirt bikes, jungle gyms, Atari joysticks, and fallen leaves permeate his work, leaving viewers with childhood memories of such objects breathless with memories. He has free form figures that seem to sometimes be suspended in midair, trapped in a present tense that’s exhilarating – but with a cost. When these kids fall out of the tree or crash the dirt bike, it will be painful. In other words, they’re totally awesome.
Come to the reception Thursday or anytime the theatre is open until May 28. Feel free to ask Ben about his process and be sure to check out the work online if you’re not able to attend. It’s good stuff. Enjoy!

Lo and behold, I'm guest curator because dear, lovely, fabulous friends Scott and Nicole will be on their honeymoon. After passing the baton to those kids ages ago, they've brought me back! Nancy, George and Bess
Nancy, George and Bess is an exhibit that features local women artists working in all media and in all stages of their career. Named after the three lead female figures in Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew series, Nancy, George and Bess encapsulates Dallas' own female talent in a cool Deep Ellum property, located at 2824 Main in Deep Ellum as a part of the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. From artists to have never had a show to artists who are collected widely, Nancy, George and Bess allows all stages and ages to emerge and share the same gallery space. Artists include: Zanne Hochberg, Angela Faz, Erica Felicella, Andrea Roberts, Jayme Nourallah, Ryann Rathbone, Kate Nelson, Kim Cadmus Owens, Alison Welsh and Cathey Miller.
Nancy, George and Bess is curated and produced by Sarah Jane Semrad (that's me!) and Erica Felicella (I suckered her in!). The event is presented by Deep Ellum Foundation and Deep Ellum Association. A free artists reception will be held on Thursday, April 3 from 7PM-9PM and will feature the sounds of Orbital Beebop.
The exhibit will also be open during Deep Ellum Arts Festival hours which are Friday, April 4 from 5PM-10PM; Saturday, April 5 from 11AM-10PM; and Sunday, April 6 from 11AM – 5PM.
A special BYOB party will be held on Saturday, April 5 from 10PM-1:30AM and feature all girl band Lovie and local girl rocker Heather Knox.
Erica and I have been cleaning the space for a couple of days now. Touching up paint and dreaming etc. So much of the nasty, gross prep work for this show reminds me of Primer - the warehouse show I produced a couple of years ago. These are always the most fun to do....

Comic Love
By Andrea Grimes
Teen and 'tween girls spend a lot of time daydreaming about boys. I spent many years doing it myself. One object of my affection: a super-cute older guy in my church youth group named David Hopkins. Also a daydreamer is Emily Edison, whose creator—that very same David Hopkins (What's up, Dave?)—says she approaches relationships with "lots of daydreaming, very little action." Emily is the main character in a comic book of the same name created by Hopkins and illustrated by Brock Rizy. Rizy's illustrations for the book will be on display at the Magnolia Theatre, 3699 McKinney Ave., from Thursday through June 7. Viewing is free during regular theater hours. Call 214-764-9106. bye bye birdie
well, it's here first, to quell any rumors or simply to keep stuff straight: i'm leaving pigeon-stone project. the official announcement was made at all of places, but a lecture at UTD nyddia and i were giving for the gallery management class tonight. the very one we audited last spring. how's that for ironic? my last show is over on march 12. and then i'm done.
i have such mixed emotions about this. there's mourning, to be sure, and i kinda feel like i'm giving my baby up for adoption. but the peace felt overrides and i know it's the right thing to do. the reasons are too mixed and varied to post them all here, but briefly, it's just time. it's just time for me to move on.
other ideas are brewing and other good stuff is in the works. it's happening. i'm not leaving dallas and not abandoning the art scene. i'm just changing forms for now. but the bird experiment is over for me.
oh, but i'm keeping the magnolia space. i'm no fool. :)
* * * * addendum * * * *
after sleeping on it, i should clarify that no one is getting abandoned. any and all artists with exhibits currently in the pike are getting taken care of and still having their shows. of course. phase out of satellite venues is going to occur over the next 2 months. nyddia will hold the continental space as the sole pigeon-stone project venue. ok. i feel clarified.

kate nelson
i like this picture of kate and me. thanks to all who made it out to her exhibit. it's fairly amazing work. ok, and this sounds corny: one of her pieces in particular gives me the weirdest feeling, like i'll run into again sometime deep in the future. i'll be a little old lady, and i'll turn a corner and see it and chuckle that i once hung that piece in dallas when i was 30.

sara ishii and agenda symposium this weekend
tonight is the sara ishii show at sozo gallery. 4524 cole. 7 to 9 pm. lovely large (wait, massive) scale oil paintings of little details of shoes. so so fabulous. they make me feel like a little kid for some reason. the sensation of being a tiny person and looking really really close at something else tiny and undiscovered, except by perchance the shoe's designer. anyway. it's a show not to be missed. did i mention they're oil. yep, i did. they'll blow yer mind.
and last night after the counter culture show (which was soooo much fun and productive in a zillion non-obvious ways) nyddia and i ran over to continental to get a peak at the final (well, almost final) install of the roskey-rhodes show saturday night. it was enough to give me chills and i'm trying to figure out how i'm going to buy some of the work. i have no money for such madness, especially at the end of the year, but my gosh, i need some of it in my life for as long as i live. the show is called 'agenda symposium'. without going too much into detail, it's killer exhibition revolving around themes of social order and urbanism and ruralism. saturday night at 3311 elm from 7 to 10. www.pigeonstoneproject.com

art conspiracy part deaux
so i've been talking to people: both artists and those who attended. almost ALL of the feedback has been great. "do this again next year!" "I can't believe how cool that was!" "how'd you get that many people to come to OAK CLIFF?" etc etc.
frustratingly, the only real complaints have been "that piece only sold for $40? i would have paid more! how unfair!" or "my piece only sold for $40? please, it goes for $400 in a gallery..."
without dwelling too much, some clarifications:
1. most artists knew, i thought, what they signed up for. that little twinge of embarrassment (or whatever) is called EGO.
2. most buyers knew what they were walking into. most did, anyway. that little twinge of irritation is similar to the cabbage patch kid phenomenon in the 80's.... too little product, too much demand. some folks paid $20 for the cabbage patch, some paid a lot more. timing, baby. timing.
3. as much as this event was about the money (it was a fundraiser after all) it wasn't about the money. it was about serendipity and generosity and the joy that for that one night, owning well-executed and amazing local original art wasn't necessarily about being rich.
so, thanks again to all who came to the show. the bands were great. the graffitti was great. the art was amazing. the charity made a ton of money despite the art not going for 'market value' or somesuchnonsense....

this is one of my favorite shows that nyddia and i have put together. it's well-thought out and interesting, not to mention wonderfully seedy and uncomfortable. the work is also well-executed and pretty damn brilliant. come check it out on saturday night.

IR Gallery closing
The IR Gallery closing reception last night was fantastic.
here’s Jason and me.
I knew going into this show that Jason’s work would cause a bit of a ruckus. More than once, I saw folks walk in, make a lap, and walk right on out. This exhibit was perfect for the last IR Gallery show: its purpose to showcase one extremely talented local artist, that maybe other galleries in town would snub their nose at or not ‘get’. Cheers to Jason. And his mom Patricia for bringing the fabulous gourmet vegan feast.

Jason Barnett : IR Gallery : this weekend
last night we hung barnett's show. it's unusual and grotesquely-beautifully-disturbing. (now is that any kind of description, my gosh) the paintings are all oil on canvas and fairly enormous. There's one mixed-media piece that i can't figure out how i feel about it yet. the reception is saturday, july 16 from 7 to 9 pm. at IR Gallery, of course.
this is the last show at the space.

story-time
a lady on a journey arrives at a still, wide river. she's had a long, hard trip thus far and deep down she knows she must cross the river. on the bank is a magnificent raft, provided by a mysterious stranger. it glistens in the sun and silently motions for her to come and take up its oars to cross safely. she looks both ways and all she can see for miles are tall trees and murky water.
she quickly realizes she must decide to use the raft or sit on the banks of this river for all time. with a small prayer for safety and courage, she boldly steps onto the raft, never having used oars or maneuvered an under current before. it's rocky at first, and she can't manage the oars very well as the raft dips and sways.
she looks back at where she's come from and it appears so peaceful, but at this point. it's simply too late, she's midway in crossing the water and it's further to go back than to proceed to the other side. mermaids in the water keep her afloat and at one point a mighty gust of wind keeps her from toppling over. she never feels alone, even though it appears as though she is. as she approaches the far bank and it's time to step off, she wistfully notices her life will never be the same, having tasted the excitement of the river.
upon arrival, she's wet, she's tired, and she's ready to be on dry land again. the lady looks at the raft and the endless fields in front of her and back at the raft. the lady considers taking the raft with her, but chooses to leave the raft for someone else to find passage with as she moves on. she knows many adventures are still ahead of her, with many more rivers to cross.
this time though, she's ready.

Escalator Maintenance Society
Where to start. The Escalator Maintenance Society show last night at the gallery was phenomenal. I spent the afternoon painting and mopping and setting up while Jason and Tim were rehearsing and I figured either the whole thing was going to be super cheesy or totally amazing based on what I was hearing. Well, the verdict is it blew my mind.
The brilliance of the show was not just the music itself, which is oddly haunting and melancholy, but the raw, artistic theatre in which it was communicated. I laughed out loud at one point at the alice-in-wonderland way in which Jason and Tim were hunched over two tiny toy pianos with Chris Youmans, the looming cello player, between them like a performance at Tim Burton’s dueling piano bar. More pictures are on the gallery site. photo credit: me.
I’m happy beyond words at how both the halls of the machine installation went as well as this one. Thank you to my dear, dear friends for trusting me enough to try something besides the same-old-same-old in the space. Daniel made recording of the night and an announcement of the details of its release will be made shortly.

HOTM pics from this weekend
click here for saturday night pics. click here for sunday night pics.
this weekend was a delicious experience. saturday night, mike graff played beautiful solo guitar interpretations of some of his late-father's work. it was moving and intimate and an honor to witness it. on sunday night, four incredibly talented guys played gorgeous music in a tiny room for an awestruck audience. i've never seen/felt anything like it. no one talked while these guys played. no one moved. it was all about the music. the remnants are still up through next week, should anyone want to stop by the gallery and check it out. i can put on a cd for you.
we recorded the sunday performance and i hope the cd's will be available soon.

IR Gallery : Halls of the Machine
May 14 is “the quiet night” featuring solo guitar interpretations by Mike Graff of select artworks with speakers mounted next to the piece. The interpreted paintings were created by Mike’s late father, Don Graff and have held Mike’s attention since childhood, always serving as a portal into the spirit realm.
May 15 is “the loud night” with a full performance by Halls of the Machine including Mike Graff on guitar, Michael Jerome on drums, Van Eric Martin on keyboard, and Zack Busby on bass. Mike and Michael are former members of local favorite Course of Empire, which dis-banded in 1998. Michael is still drumming professionally with Pleasure Club. Van Eric Martin is trained as a composer and is currently working with Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth. Zack Busby played bass with Dallas band Slow Roosevelt.

yay for sound installation!
i'm all about inviting my artists to dinner. :) it's confirmed. mike graff of halls of the machine, formerly of course of empire, will be performing atmospheres for lovers and sleepers in a two night sound installation may 14 and 15 from 8-10 both nights at ir gallery.
it's long been a dream of mine to merge both my groups of peeps.... visual/musical and cram them all together in one room and see what happens. folks tend to 'get' one or the other or maybe feel more comfortable with one or the other. i can not wait for the cross-pollention to occur.

Stephen Lapthisophon at IR Gallery
The Lapthisophon install has been going great. Yesterday and today have been preoccupied with staples and xerox copies and ladders. Stephen is wonderful to work with and tends to be very intuitive when composing. it's cool to watch. The show is an investigation of the life and thinking of Robert Smithson and is one night only, tomorrow, from 6-10 PM at IR Gallery. i'm looking forward to it myself.
in other news: Jiri has joined the Happy Bullets:
They're trying to sign him on as the full time keyboardist, but as his mama, i say there might some child labor laws in place to prevent that. rawk on.

robert smithson
the robert smithson exhibit at the DMA is a must see. nyddia and i went last night with the kids, which was a mild disaster. they didn't run through any piles of sand or throw rocks, to be sure, but they certainly didn't let us actually read anything. i could have spent an hour or two walking around with a camera. in fact, i think i might have to go back on one of my kid-free days. the show is up through april 3 and thursday nights are free at the DMA, just fyi.
tues march 15 at IR Gallery, chicago artist stephen lapthisophon is doing a one-night only investigation of the philosophy of robert smithson. 6-10 pm. coincides nicely, eh?
