La Entrada

SJS in Marfa by erica.jpg

photo by Erica Felicella. She took this last fall when a small group of us went out to Marfa for the Chinati Foundation Open House. My family has a little ranch out that way, just south of town. Few things boil my blood quite like La Entrada does. You see, somebody somewhere (cough - NAFTA - cough) thought it would be brilliant to build a super highway through a small West Texas community. All in the name of free trade and distribution of cheap goods whose parent companies externalize the costs of these goods in the name of cheap labor and no health insurance and crappy working conditions - but don't get me started. Meanwhile, back at the ranch (pun fully intended), 800 trucks will potentially rumble by on the highway that runs right in front of our family's ranch entrance.

There go the roads. The charming town of Marfa. The stars. The clean air. The QUIET. What do we get in return? A validation of cheap goods coming from south of the border. A validation of cheap labor. A validation of poverty. Google this stuff. I'm pondering what my part in all this will be. I might be heading west in the next few months, schedule allowing. Maybe I'll have some ideas by then.

whirlwind weekend

I'm so glad this weekend is over. Had Jessica and I known what we were getting into with this whole juried architecture business, we might have been too nervous to take it on. That being said, WHEW, this weekend is over and we have winners! We can't release names until the party on Saturday March 1 at PanAmerican ArtProjects.

Sitting in on the jury deliberations was very, very cool. I loved seeing the chemistry between professionals in various disciplines debate the artistic vision and architectural credibility of each of the entries. They were like a 5 pronged organism that moved together through each of the entries. Thought was given to each and every one and in the end and nice 2 hour discussion about the top 10 or so ensued. Pictures coming soon. For now, back to work.

In other news, it's my baby girl's birthday today! She's 9! CRAZY! Happy birthday Eva!

poison ivy

I've been honing intangible skills of patience, self-restraint, and inner calm. Having never really had poison ivy - ever - I wasn't prepared for the horrific reality that is having skin completely broken out in a red rash that spreads and spreads and spreads. When presented with an opportunity to climb the LRTX trestle at the Tree Carving last weekend with safety gear and a harness, you better believe I took the offer. Now unknown at the time the tree I used to rappel up and down was covered in english ivy. Oh and some poison ivy. Was it worth it? Sure. After two years, I got some shots front up on top of the trestle.

yay for being on the upswing of the rash. Never again.

serendipity

Last night I had the honor to hear Robert Hammond speak with the Dallas Architecture Forum about The High Line project in NYC. The eerie similarity to the La Reunion TX project and how we are using a trestle too had me in goose bumps most of his talk. They too did an ideas competition. And had an idea with a fair share of odds stacked against them when they first started. Now? They're almost fully funded. After it was over I had to introduce myself. Needless to say it was most enjoyable and crazy inspiring. CLick around on the High Line site. It's amazing.

lent

lent has begun. no booze and no dairy for 40 days. we do this every year with superb consequences. it's a test of endurance and patience although we give ourselves sundays off, which is nice, but still. i guess i'll do extra bikram classes to pass the time...
