Make Space for Art jury announced

Last night at Murray Street Coffee, we had the jury announcement for 'Make Space for Art', our juried architecture exhibit we're hosting to generate ideas for the La Reunion TX facility which will eventually be built on 35 acres of donated land in Oak Cliff. The champagne poured and the crowd was dymanic. Marvelous time. Read all about the jurors here.

Dallas Indie Experience

Dallas Indie Experience. Ok, not the best name ever, but you get the idea. No matter what, it's a great opp to volunteer and spend money locally. Friday, November 29 is Spree Designer Showcase at The Apartment. Saturday, December 1 is The Urban Street Bazaar at Dallas Market Hall. Sunday, December 2 is Deck the Halls at Sons of Hermann Hall.

I hear through my pal Cindy that Julie with Urban Street Bazaar still needs a few more volunteers. Perks abound for those who want to barter time for class credits. Email info@urbanstreetbazaar.com with "volunteer" in the subject line for times and positions left on Saturday, Dec 1 at Dallas Market Hall.... YAY local!

Bye Bye Love.

I had plans to complete what I call "the darkroom project" over my long weekend, but a cold has knocked me out of commission for two days straight. Ugh. So today the process of tearing out and storing my analog darkroom officially began. It's been a long, dusty, chemical-ly and bittersweet afternoon pulling out trays, bottles, and enlargers to wrap and put in storage. Eventually I want to revist the books, research, and work I've done so far into making my own paper, emulsion, and mixing my own chemicals from raw materials - delve into alternative processes fully. Not now and not anytime soon! And don't email me about my equipment folks.... I'll be donating it to LRTX.

There were a few sidetracked moments, of course. When storing some old negatives, I came across pictures from a few years back that made me a little happy and little sad all at once. And then the baby pictures - I have so many awesome pictures of Eva and Jiri from yester-year. I also got to re-visit some stockpiled materials I have some hair-brained ideas for.... inks, cans, metal shavings, movie previews on film, papers, etc. More on that later, I'm sure.

In other news... it look like I'm going to be an auctioneer for art con. heeeeee!

Thankful. Grateful. In no particular order.

We have our annual stray cat Thanksgiving tomorrow. Which means that a random group of folks will gather 'round and east yummy vegetarian fare and drink loads of good wine and most likely guitars will break out and music will be had. (How's that for a long sentence?) I'm grateful for a whole lot this year and let's just leave it at that. Mostly though, I'm grateful for a capacity to live and love and LEARN. A lot. A long and winding year culminates with a cold November evening in my lovely home on Thanksgiving eve. Thank you, world, for the peace and patience to put up with me. I love you right back. No exceptions.

old 97s

old 97s.JPG

I was listening to Doreen front and center. Last night was awesome. And now Wreck Your Life is on repeat. The Old 97s are arguably one of the best bands to ever come outta Dallas.

It's sweet listening to Paul telling Eva what life was like when this album came out. Paul was dating Rhett's little sister and he and I hadn't met me yet. There I was going to Old 97s shows as a college student. My, how life changes.

theories

So when one has a theory, it must be tested and argued about and proven, i.e. using the scientific method. My scholastic background and training is that of a scientist.

Moving on - I am working with an awesome gal who is formulating with me a series of experiments to test a few theories we have and maybe someday publish a paper. Individual - defined community - systemic. I watched Michael Moore's Sicko the other night and it got me going in another direction. (Good movie, btw. Wow.) Said another way - a new lens to view these experiments. In addition, I'm smack in the middle of Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma. Same stuff. And then there's the Farm Bill. And Art. And Supermarkets. And Land Conservation. And social entrepreneurs. And.. And.. And.. It's all in there swimming and swimming. THIS is proof I'm a nerd, folks. Peace.

muzak

I'd be hard pressed to say what my favorite band is. But for the week of November 12, 2007 it just might be Radiohead. For I can't even say how many days I've had on repeat: Ok Computer, Kid A, the Thom Yorke solo album, In Rainbows, and Hail to the Thief. the SJ is getting lots done with that soundtrack, folks. Paul and I did the math - we have every album. This is a good thing.

In other news, my favorite boy band - The Strange Boys - are doing an in-store at Good Records on December 1. Awesomeness. You should totally go hear them if you're in Dallas because, well, they're awesome. When Cari and I were in NY in August, we missed them by ONE NIGHT!! ARRRGHH. Now that those cuties have moved to Austin I don't get my fix like I used to.

Ranting over.

random rambling

Last night at Beckley Brewhouse, I ran into someone I went to junior high with. In Temple no less. Talk about a small world! His name is Roy and, well, he looks the same. It's bizarre. Wondering if I do...?

Art Chicas went great over the weekend. WOW. I'm astonished at the awesome stuff we're pulling off. Art Chicas is an example of the kinds of things we want to do with our artists in residence. Of course once we have our building, we'll do those things THERE.

Speaking of THERE. I've been going out there more and more. I feel very much at peace and fully inspired when I am on the land. Meeting architects and potential patrons gives me great joy. GREAT joy. I can see it and hear it and smell it and feel it when I'm on the property. And that's what gives me peace. How do you eat an elephant? Oh, one bite at a time.

Other elephants: Art Con. Check out this video by Rob McCollum. Cool.

Cool in Dallas? No, not so much. I'm sick of being hot.

Peace. (And a shout out to Cari who is the best listener evar. Public thank you.)

frontier life

Pushing the frontier is a fun place to be. Alive. To be the best we can and always scan the horizon but still enjoy right here. Right now. To participate in the journey.

Ok, maybe the music in Gachet (one of my remote offices) is just really inspiring today. Tearing up just thinking about it. Peace.

Best Kind of Busy Ever

Can't seem to find time to write and post pics from the Lovie CD release last weekend. Can't seem to find the time to comment on the lovely Marchel Ivery's passing (who I used to serve egg whites to back in college. RIP, man.) Can't seem to be able to share the excitement over at La Reunion TX with Tree Carving planning, strategic meetings, SMU kids cleaning up our property, Art Chicas, and the making of new friends. Read about all that here. Can't seem to get around to writing about Art Con III and the awesome new mad scientist look it has. Oi. Suffice it to say: it's really good around here. Kids, Paul, friends, all of it. Peace to you and yours.

day of the dead

The kids were asking last night about Halloween. Like, what is it, why, who, etc. They're so cool to ask and not just do-do-do-candy-candy-candy-costume-costume-costume and NOT ask why. (FYI - Eva was a bat and Jiri was Luke Skywalker. I mean are there other costumes? no.) Anyway. We were talking about Day of the Dead and All Saint's Day and the like and it of course got me thinking about my grandmother who passed away this past January. I didn't show it outwardly, but her passing was really pretty hard on me. I distracted myself pretty intensely in the months leading up to her passing and just after with all kinds of stuff. I was her guardian / power-of-attorney and her death was long and painful and when she finally did pass, it was total relief. Then there was the guilt about being relieved that someone you love has dies. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Anyhoo, it occured to me just last night that I never really got to mourn her. Many of the feelings of sadness have of course passed now and to get to remember her (happy and sad) in the context of Day of the Dead is pretty awesome. Here's to you grandma.
