richard serra

richard serra.jpg

a few weeks ago, i had the opportunity to go to the moma in new york and check out the richard serra exhibit. (scroll down and watch the install video) it was stellar. i love the shape of the sky they carve out when they're placed outside. and the contrast of the rust and the blue. i love the textures in the rusted steel. i love the way they make me feel like i'm an ant in a tin can. i love the complete absurdity of working in such a monstrous and difficult material. his early work up on the 6th floor was cool, don't get me wrong, it was just really small comparatively. and by small i mean not at all! the best part was getting all disoriented in a few of the pieces with friends on the 3rd floor. wait. did you say 3rd floor, sarah jane? yes! that actually woke me up in my sleep thinking about how they placed those pieces on the 3rd floor. when i wear my production hat, that's my favorite part of the whole exhibit. the logistical challenge of placing these inside hurts my head.

last, i love the way boring human stuff like judgement evaporates and what's left is wonderment. his work defies human 'limits' and therefore our perfect state of joy emerges when inside and outside of his work. perma grin walking out, i tell you!

movie review : rocket science

so the new movie rocket science is cute. i liked it. it's well done and funny and i'm impressed this is someone's first go at a decent-sized budget movie. easy to criticize, but equally easy to like. the lead, reece thompson, does a killer stutter. and the fast-talking debaters are stellar. oh, and there's an awesome cello throwing scene that hit a little close to home. {i chuckled out loud anyway}

i like the way it ends the best. the easy routes would have been to go for the horrific or the cheesy feel-good paths, but director jeffrey blitz (same dude who did the documentary spellbound) went for the real ending instead - the one that you could buy and take home and unwrap and smile about. i had many conversations with folks in the movie and folks producing it. it's a world i don't know much about - learned a lot. plus, new york flat out doesn't suck. and meeting folks like eef barzelay (who did the sound track) and his super funny wife doesn't suck either!

opens friday, august 17 in dallas.

overheard at the airport

a tall, skinny white guy with a striped shirt and cell phone headset paces in a windowed corner at the DC airport. it's early evening and the sun is setting behind jets. i've got my back to a row of windows. next to me is cari and skipping over a few seats is an african american lady working on her computer with earplugs. across from me is a man working on his computer. we're all waiting for a delayed flight to dallas.

"no. no. you don't understand. he can't be seen with a hat on! i got another report that malcolm had a fedora on. this is against dress code. image is everything in this business and for him to be seen in a fedora is unacceptable! do you need me to call malcolm. because i'll call malcolm. you know what, i'll send him an email tonight explaining to him that he can't be in a hat. in fact, when he's on business, he needs to be in a suit and tie. and not a western tie. a proper tie. i'll email him tonight."

pause. he's listening to his earpiece intently.

"furthermore, i saw where he spent over $1000 on books at the airport. who knows what he was reading! he can't be seen reading just any book! he needs to know that his personal development is in our hands! i will personally give him a list of books he can choose from."

we casual listeners are by this time riveted. i glance at cari and the african american lady leans forward to catch my eye.

"do you hear this? oh my god. do you hear this? i'm gonna call my sister. tellin' him he can't read books or wear a hat...."

i chuckle. cari chuckles. the guy typing on his computer cracks a grin. it's so comical we can't NOT laugh. the african american lady pulls her earplugs out and says again, "did you hear that? seriously. did. you. hear. that?"

it's a gaggle by now and we're all talking outloud about it. the man goes on:

"listen, malcolm has to know he can't be seen in a fedora and can't be seen reading certain books. no western ties. always in a suit when he's on george bush business...."

i couldn't make this up if i tried.

best day

yosemite 001-1.jpg

last night after the art con board meeting was adjourned, we each shared our best day ever. a thread: we were all either in nature or in a situation where we were totally humbled. that's me with a gal named liz during the summer i lived in yosemite national park. we'd hitchhiked to tuolome meadows earlier in the day and gone swimming in lake tenaya in the high country before heading up to cloud's rest from the back side. when we got to the top, an awesome thunderstorm was brewing. it was blackness behind us and as far as we could see in front, the most beautiful sunset. when our hair began rising, we knew we had to run several hundred feet down to the tree line to not get struck by lightning. we had intended to sleep under the stars on the top of cloud's rest, but we camped out in a tent provided by a stranger named john. i'm 20 years old in that picture. what a wonderful memory.

2007 is the year of travel. clearly.

the ask was almost too ridiculous and out of left field to NOT turn down. and when you throw in a place to stay and the possibility of some cheap, excellent indian food, i don't know about you, but i was sold. strap a camera on me and make the whole experience work FOR me? sweet jebesus, i'm in! i still don't know why i said yes, except it was if the Universe called my name and the dang ticket just kinda booked itself within a half hour. details next thursday.
