adventures in a new kind of marketing
so, the yaris works week is over. yay! some events were waaay successful and others were just at super-dumb times of day or simply too wackadoo to be pulled off properly, even though they were a great idea in theory. some of it was totally out of my control and some of it i just knew better. thank you to andrea roberts for being my sidekick. pictures from the week can be found on flickr.
my local art economy just got a little boost, and for that, i'm pleased. it was also fun to hook up some of my favorite places to go eat and hang out. also a good thing. will i do this again? probably not. i'm ready to resume my regularly scheduled programming. thanks for supporting me, friends. i totally owe you one.

of personal note
so i'm a distant space cadet because my grandma is super sick. i'm pretty sad about it and it sucks having to make hospice calls and start thinking about what outfit she'll wear and which bills need to be canceled etc. somehow i ended up being THAT person out of my whole family. oddly enough, planning for death is quite a production. comparisons could be made to childbirth. or a marriage. and the life changing effects said events have on relationships.

green is sexy
so, i picked up the new issue of Dwell Magazine the other day at Wholier-than-thou-Foods because i was lured by the 'green goes mainstream' cover story. having been what i would call green for many, many years now, i wanted to see what this meant in the context of such a foxy looking design magazine.
after reading it from cover to cover, my conlusion is to say 'yay!' to everyone jumping on the green band wagon. there are a few sustainable communities going up around dallas: one near royal lane, one in the cedars, and one in denton (i'll accumulate links later). probably more. everyone has a hybrid car, it seems, and most folks i know are installing compact fluorescent light bulbs faster than you can say 'al gore'.
here's the scoop with me: i'm no hippy-granola-eating-militant. i'm a mama. and the thought of my babies growing up thinking they can have WHAT they want WHEN they want at the expense of not only our planet, but those in lower socio-economic groups keeps me up at night. i awaken from terrible dreams where there's not enough water and it's too hot to think. when i look at the sky and see the long white lines and watch all the geek-out pbs science shows and really think about what we're eating and where it came from, i start to totally freak out. fortunately, la reunion is helping me focus some of that panic into something productive. i get to channel my angst with something i love: art and artists.

my daughter
i'm sure all moms say this: but my daughter is freakin brilliant. obsessed with string theory, eva sometimes mixes up her branes and gravitons, but whatev, she gets the basic idea of the 'theory of everything'. she extolls the joys of nova to all her friends and converts many-a-family to tuning in on tuesday nights. (you should too!!)
so today in the car, she was devising an experiment to create a vacuum and see what would happen to oxygenated and un-oxygenated blood. like, you know, would the oxygen leave the blood to form a gas? i told her to try it. and she told me she was just seven and clearly could not but that she would do it when she gets older. or tell her scientist friends to do it in case she became an artist.
awesome.

i think i might have sold my soul to camel
daniel's performance at the gypsy tearoom on friday was wonderful! not too many folks were there, but those of us who were there had a marvelous time. although i'm totally not a smoker, occasionally i indulge. and friday night was one of those nights. the camel dude saw me and came over and asked if i wanted a free pack of smokes.... sure! i'll pass them to my pal carissa, i thought.
so he asks for my ID. uh, ok, i think. he manually types in the info and then runs the magnetic strip through his hand-held machine. he takes a night-vision photograph of it and asks a series of questions about what my favorite brand is (i don't have one) and how often i buy cigarettes (never). then when i start to ask him what this info is for, he just shrugs and says they'll send me 'coupons and stuff.' so finally, after i've traded all but my social security number and shoe size, he offers me my choices for my free pack. awesome, so i got my free pack for my pal carissa. then he asks me if i've ever heard of spoon. duh, i say, and he passes me a couple of free tickets.
(picture by carissa) score! worth it to trade all my info? no, probably not. i'll most likely never qualify for insurance again. or something equally sinister. but i'm destined to have a rad time thursday night!
{8.10 addendum: no babysitter = no spoon. bummer.}
