AWESOME! call me a sell-out, whatev, more info coming in the next few weeks. it's going to be a blast.

residency visit
our vacation wasn't all play even though *gasp* i did leave my computer home and only took a couple of calls. on our way home, well, not exactly on our way, we stopped off in the delightful little town of eureka springs, arkansas and checked out the writer's colony, a residency program devoted to writers and composers. sharon and jane took a great deal of time out of their day to tell me all about their programming and share with me the clever collaboration with corporate america for various aspects of their brick and mortar costs. they feature a state of the art sponsored kitchen (above) for cookbook writers! it's bizarre but it works and is invaluable to their programming.
inspired about la reunion? oh yeah.

highlights
so springfield doesn't suck so much. i really thought it would. we had one of those all american vacations where we picked up the visitors guide at the missouri line and did all the local attractions. springfield is close to branson, so the cheese-factor is high. day one we went to fantastic caverns, which were, well, fan-freakin-tastic. although, doh! i left my camera at home the day we went. incredibly un-environmentally friendly, we went with the kitch and toured the once-speakeasy anyway. explaining what 'kitch' means to a 7 year old is a whole other hilarious commentary. another time.
day two was exotic animal paradise. one of those fossil rim type places where you drive through and gawk at weird animals. at the end was a petting zoo. fun and stinky.
day three was 'cornstock' at a familiy farm featuring horse rides (above), corn on the cob, and petting pregnant barn cats. a bluegrass band was slated to play, but had already left by the time we made it out. what else can i say, it was quaint and we bought produce out of their barn.
eva got her ears pierced.
saxon shore at a local club.
followed by denison witmer.
and we brought home a new feline friend! twas good trip, although we're glad to be back. of course now, i sure have my country itch on. good thing we've got a hill country trip and a ranch trip coming up.

pre-vacation post
eva lost another tooth and she looks about 10 now. she knows the tooth fairy isn't real because we never have really done those sorts of things (santa et al) with her or the boy. she knows a good thing when she sees it though and demands money under her pillow.
ah, i need to plug Sur del Trinidad, a group show i had a hand in jurying a few weeks ago. it's at the Ice House Cultural Center in Oak Cliff (my 'hood). Reception July 22. the sucky part? i wont be there, but go check it out.
in other news, i got to speak out loud yesterday about being a preacher's daughter to a bunch of preachers! ha! that was only a small part of the talking i did, but the most refreshing part, to be sure.

cleanp-up @ la reunion
so, i can't stop thinking about what happened yesterday. 30 or so folks showed up at La Reunion and worked in the 95 degree heat to pick up junk: tires, shingles, bottles, even kitchen sinks. not one person ever complained. not one person got hurt. everyone smiled and laughed it off when the wheelbarrow broke. good friends and total strangers 'got it' yesterday. it's my hope that what happened yesterday becomes infectous because that's what will help us through the long uphill with creating something out of nothing. this dream for dallas is catching on. thank you to all who made it yesterday and to those who sent their well-wishes from afar.
kevin nash was on hand to shoot some footage for a promo piece and the talented erica felicella was there to shoot stills. i shot not one single picture all day! so, i'll post a few once erica uploads tham onto flickr.

clean-up at la reunion is tomorrow
oh, the laundry list of things i had planned tonight. but i'm resting for the la reunion community clean-up day. 40+ folks are coming and i figure it's going to be super hot, so i'm staying in. sooo worth it, although i kinda wanted that obligatory shot of myself and wayne/michelle with michelle's work. alas.

Road Agent Ambush 2006
(Stand and Deliver: Your Money or Your Life)
Starting July 14, running through August 25.
Every Friday evening this summer, Road Agent mounts a different mini-exhibition of new work by a mystery artist whose studio and mind we looted (earlier that week).
Road Agent Ambush is essentially two things: a group show spread out over time, and a weekly in-gallery studio visit. All the work in Ambush is totally new, fresh out of each artist’s studio. The exhibitions will be often one to three fully realized pieces you may not otherwise have an opportunity to view. (And some of the work will ship off to other cities within days of being completed.) Ambush is an opportunity to bring the community together, discuss the work—discuss, even, the state of the North Texas art scene during the long, lazy days of summer. We’ll drink beer and slap each other on the back, talk about the vacations we’re not taking this year.
Some of the artists you already know; some will be new to you. All are making work worth the time and space. Artists include: M., Titus O’Brien, Richard Patterson, Edward Setina, Paul Slocum, Raychael Stine, and Erick Swenson. Now you know who the players are, but you’ll have to show up to find out who’s up that Friday. Though we’ll confirm that M. will kick things off, all bets are off when it comes to who’s next.
addendum from Road Agent: The whole thing, really, is based on a year-long project Road Agent witnessed in London in 2000. It was high energy, cool, and always interesting.

charmed life
yesterday, we dropped off eva at her grandparent's house to do an art camp at the fort worth modern this week. i'm jealous and want to take the classes but alas, i'm not 7. anyway, we were encouraged to check out the permanent collection before she started her classes this week. and check it out, we did. we played inside the impressive richard serra piece out front and took turns jumping and clapping and singing inside to generate the cool echo noises that the piece makes happen.
then we went inside and explored (at a 7 year old's pace) some of the works of art. one of my favorite pieces and the one we spent the most time with was hiraki sawa's dwelling.
we laughed pretty hard at the beginning, but then got a little stressed out towards the end. the busier those planes got, the more near misses with other planes, door frames, and toothbrushes there were.
i got a call from her earlier today and it sounds like day one was magnificent. lovely memories she'll have.

on/offline when you die
i read this article this AM on rhizome.org and was intrigued, for sure. as a person with like 6 email addresses and profiles and accounts all over, i'm inspired now to cancel what i can and delete the froof. it begs the question of what the heck happens to one's flickr account, or blog, or better yet, myspace page. weirdly sad.

pointless commentary (cryptic and therefore pointless)
oh for heaven's sake. me getting pissy about a realization i had at least two years ago and shared with an art professional is silly (i could go back and look for the email i sent her as proof, but why?) it probably was already in the universe anyway, right? ideas are free, after all. you make the money by doing something about them, which i wasn't. it all seemed like a big 'duh' to me. i don't mind submitting ideas, thoughts, or anything for that matter if i could just get a little credit. credit-schmedit. i guess i should give that up too.
it's along the same lines as all the silly little teenagers who use my images (specifically all those converse pics) on their journals and such. i'm such a coward. i can't bear to post a link. but i bet you know who you are. ;)
in other news, i miss eva. she's at camp.

eva goes to camp
in the morning. we spent the day packing and labeling clothes and going to the store to buy all the little sundries that she needs. paul and i are trying to be cool about it, but we're totally FREAKING out. sure, sure, it'll be so nice to play house with only one kid with the comfort that the female child is having the time of her life, but still. we're a pretty tight-knit little crew. we're not against getting babysitters and such when paul and i want to go out, oh no, but our babies are with us 99% of the time other than that. she's stayed with relatives in the past, i suppose, for a week at a time, but that's different somehow. she'll be a CAMP. with a whole passle of other little girls! i'm so excited for her!

syriana
call me socially slow, but we just saw syriana last night. excellent movie, and on a myriad of levels. it sucessfully communicated a fictional plot line that's totally believeable and not far-fetched. suspicions many of us have about the oil/money/greed cycle and how it works were played out in a realistic, human way. the 'bad' guys still won, but we the viewers got a little taste of redemption when matt damon's character goes home to be with his wife and remaining child. we also got satisfaction in clooney's character saying "eff-it, i have to do the right thing, even though i'm aware of the cost."
what's the quote? "it's difficult to get someone to understand something when his salary depends on not understanding it." - upton sinclair.

news of my community
last night was of course the team evil show at bar of soap. a zillion pictures taken, par usual, and for now, only one little shot. maybe more on flickr later when i get some free time....
in other news, little man (jiri) has changed his name again. it's now officially "monster-truck-jiri-hands-shooting-fire-no-no." awesome. not quite "dances-with-wolves" but it is 2006 after all....
