dallas is small. the internet only makes it smaller.
warning: it's a classic sarah-jane-rant.
in the googlable age in which we operate, dallas (specifically the dallas art/music scene) shrinks to the size of a pin-head. negative commentary made by jaded (read: old and tired and pathetic) individuals is, i suppose, a necessary and yet uncomfortable part of trying something new and/or sustaining innovative projects in our fair city. questioning is a good thing. talking smack is another animal altogether. there's this notion that one can be critical (or flat out mean) and still manage to be "legit" through annonymity. or is it just a way to avoid taking responsibilty for opinions? whatever. the fact is, annonymity reduces credibility. the beautiful part about everyone i care to work with is that they are willing to act *and* slap their name on it. own it. in the end, my friends, jealousy doesn't contribute to creativity in our city. the end.

oh blessed day: it's in the mail
catherine and i mailed the irs docs today. it's done and la reunion is officially pending as a non-profit. what a relief! to celebrate, we went to the brand-spanking new W hotel for a celebratory sunday afternoon cocktail. four words: it is really nice.
in other news, paul's band played over the weekend at the cavern:
they're goofy, but fun to watch play.

theatre fire
my pal hal samples took some amazing shots of the fire at the arcadia. and here's more amazing shots by another friend george lacy, who lives around the corner from the theatre. it's sick, but it did cross my mind to drive to my old hood and snap a few pictures. to say good-bye. to close my eyes and remember standing in a long line out front. or whatever. luckily, i'm someone's mama and my better judgement kicked in and i stayed home. besides, the kids would have been late to swim class.
oh, wow. here's a link to the dallas morning news shots.

what a bummer. the arcadia is burning down to the ground. i used to love going there back when i was in college. and under 21. 'retrocadia' on sunday nights was THE BEST and i have so many good stories from those days. oh, the outfits we would wear. maybe i'll scrounge up some embarassing pictures.

Illustrating the Theater
By Jennifer Medina
Here's one more reason to eschew the cineplex down the street: The Magnolia Bar Gallery (located inside the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village) is putting the art back into the art house theater. In an attempt to bring more attention to the regional art scene, the Magnolia Bar Gallery offers exhibitions from local artists such as Vladimir Zimakov, a 1996 graduate of Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet, who presents Musicians and Inventors: The Beginning, a new collection of paintings. Russian-born Zimakov has a special knack for illustrations, which have donned the covers of everything from books and magazines to CDs. His interest in publication design is one rarely seen these days, making his work all the more interesting and accessible. (Picture a pen-and-ink Edward Gorey illustration fusing with Kafka and you'll begin to understand.) Next time you go see a movie at the Magnolia, get there early, because there's more to a theater lobby than giant cardboard cut-outs of Tom Hanks. The Musicians and Inventors: The Beginning reception is June 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and all art will be on view through July 27 during regular theater hours at the Magnolia Bar Gallery,3699 McKinney Ave. Call 214-764-9106 or visit vladimirzimakov.com.

i love dallas: where else can an evening go like this?
patrick and i went to an awesome lecture last night at the rachofsky house. led by charissa terranova, it was about the house itself and its white white walls. twas nice to scratch that philosophical architecture itch i got to experience at ud. it's funny, i didn't make too many a's in college (embarassing, but true) but i did in art and architecture as well as several of my philosophy classes. the sad truth is i realized i wanted to change my major half way through, but was so far down the chemistry/physics/math trail at that point i could not. alas. in any event, the rachofsky house is sight to behold and wander through. and the art ain't too shabby either.
after a lovely dinner alone at the cosmic cup and orchestrating the hanging of vladimir's show at the magnolia (sorry no pics), i met paulie at sons of hermann hall for the new year.

they're so good it's frightening.
and who knew shellac was sooooo good live. i'd never buy the album and listen with the kids while we homeschool but i sure will catch them live if they come through again:

Brock Rizy and David Hopkins on Unfair Park
david hopkins and brock rizy on unfair park. here's the original link.
and the part that mentions them:
"In fact, BenBella’s pop-culture library has proven so successful Yeffeth’s company has launched an imprint called Smart Pop, which includes some 30 books ranging in subject from King Kong to Star Wars to The Simpsons; if something’s got its own DVD boxed set, BenBella has a book to go with it. But, I gotta say, these books aren’t just dork-lit: “They’re very accessible,” says David Hopkins, the Arlington-based comic book writer who does in fact have a wife and a very adorable daughter. Hopkins and illustrator Brock Rizy have a new book, the astounding Emily Edison, due in stores June 28 (but more about that in coming weeks). Hopkins also contributed an essay to BenBella’s new book The Man from Krypton: A Closer Look at Superman; his is titled “A History of Violence,” and it reads like a smart-ass National Public Radio commentary in which he chronicles Superman’s murderous early days with his later tendencies to punch out…uh, snowmen wearing top hats.
“It’s not super-academeic, but it’s not talking down to you,” Hopkins says of the publishing house’s titles. “Most people with a decent college education would get what’s going on in the books… They have this really nice niche. There may be other publishers doing it, but I haven’t seen it. My wife was big into the Pride and Prejudice book they did [Flirting with Pride and Prejudice: Fresh Perspectives on the Original Chick-Lit Masterpiece, published last September]. She read it cover to cover and loved it.” Hopkins is also finishing an essay for an upcoming Spider-man book of essays; I’d call him a dork, but I think he’s just about the coolest guy in the whole wide world." –Robert Wilonsky
yay for david and brock getting a little more press! (brock's work comes down from the magnolia tonight and up goes vladimir's.)

ready steady
between hanging vladimir's show, going to the dallas architecture forum lecture at the rachofsky house and the new year at sons of hermann.... i've got a great evening planned! yay! maybe this will pull me out of my weird slump.
which i could go on and on about. in summation, i don't like it when it's pointed out that my power has been taken from me. (who does?!) and by more than one person. it's pathetic. my solution for the week: cut. off.

shows this week
it's odd not putting on such a large quantity of shows these days. but! the cool thing is several of the artists i have worked with in the past are showing this week! here's the DL:
tonight: six by six at kettle art. i'll be there. past artists i have worked with and who are showing - jason barnett, marie sena, luke harnden, carissa byers, cathey miller, karla garcia, angela faz, erica felicella, danielle barry, and autumn musso, among others. awesome. 6 curators chose 6 artists to show work and all works sell for $66. and it's on 6/6/06. too many creepy 6's for me. but i take the power away from it by not buying into it. HA!
and this friday, my friend kelly berry is showing at the Performing Arts Conservatory in plano. i know, i know, nose bleed territory, but kelly's work is totally worth it. i'll be shooting a wedding and can't go. BUMMER!

weekend update
board:
never having worked for a board before, i'm in uncharted territory. but ecstatic to have the expertise and help. everything else i've pulled off has been a farly solitary experience with the exception of the art conspiracy. yep, so it's official. i've been hired to be the la reunion executive director. awesome. it was already a given, but still.
lubbock:
my top four favorite things about lubbock are (in no particular order): achingly flat land. wide blue skies dotted with small puffy clouds. my grandma. a decent college radio station. other than that, forsaken land. my gosh. i'm so glad to be home.
art prostitute:
i am so glad those boys moved to dallas from denton. the dave kinsey show is fantastic and i had the best time talking to him. as i told my friend allison today, i love going to events like that and just talking to the artist. who they are as a person and what they're up to in life. what their experience in dallas is like and then i leave that conversation and look at their work. the glam and the photos and the nice catering and wine only go so far.
the happy bullets:
i went to their show last night at the cavern. sans camera. *audible gasp* carissa was there too with no camera. *insert another audible gasp* i haven't been to a show in a long time without a lens. although it was nice to not be distracted by shooting, it was rather distracting to not feel in my element by not shooting. whatever. it makes sense to probably only me and carissa. wink.
