wwdsd?

this is coming from a mom who can't stand musicals. seriously. nothing. worse. skin crawls everytime. but it's really cute when eva sings along and dances a dance routine to every song on the seussical sound track.

portfolio

oh god. every few weeks i have a panic about the portfolio part of my site. i have soooooo many more pictures than this site even clues viewers in to. i need a total over haul. i don't even know where to start. so i just go into denial and don't touch it. it's coming though. i just need a good solid 8 hour day to pull it off. no kids. no phone calls. and maybe another set of eyes to help me sort.

DSC_0301.jpg

last night was the dallas observer music awards and we had a really good time. it's always nice to be out with my husband and i'm not working and he's not playing. hal has some nice shots on his site (of course) and i posted a few of mine on flickr. i can't believe the happy bullets didn't win anything. my gosh. they had so many freakin nominations! of course, salim nourallah (winner) isn't a shame to come in after. pictured above is sweet chad stockslager playing with the drams.

la reunion - more of the story

la reunion prom (11).jpg

so prom. yes, it was a fun party and we did raise enough to file our 501(c)3 papers. yay! again, more pictures on flickr. and more coming, as well as the yearbooks once all the pictures are assimilated. thanks for coming to the party, everyone! i'm so appreciative of everyone who helped pull the event off. pictured above are the three confirmed board members thus far. the beautiful allison graham with viginia cook realtors and the super awesome arts PR gal lisa taylor. and of course my dear friend and girl reporter, catherine cuellar.

more about the la reunion project. thanks to a generous donation and weird twists of serendipity, we have a 32 acre property in oak cliff we can use to house the residency program for many years to come. it needs a lot of work but we can really feel like we can take ownership of some ideas because we have access to the property for so long.

yesterday we paid a visit to show some friends and start some ideas cooking:

catherine and jason.jpg

there are babbling brooks, wild roses, and lotsa poison ivy. pictured are catherine and jason woelfel. (photographer at prom)

trellis.jpg

a chunk of the old dallas interurban rail line runs through one edge of the property. it's lovely.

scott and nicole and evan.jpg

of course no trip would be complete without a little excitement, which came in the form of a flat tire. here, nicole gives us a peak at her super cute boyfriend scott's undies.

changing the car tire.jpg

blessed. blessed. and under obligation. got it. incredibly exciting. all of this.

guilty pleasure and a good story, i promise.

confession: i'm addicted to the Texas Ranch House show on PBS. the premise is a cattle ranch in 1867. i come from a texan lineage of cattle ranchers, so maybe that helps my interest along. i've only caught the last couple night's episodes, but it's good, people, i assure you. stories have circulated my whole life about what my dad's childhood was like. he was born and raised out on a ranch in marfa. he's the oldest child of three and he has recounted stories of his duties out on the ranch as well as what his siblings duties were. cattle, horses, and sheep were involved. he learned to ride very young and was responsible for all sorts of chores along the way. at some point, the family took to ranching some family land near uvalde, right around when my dad was in 6th grade. fast forward to my life. i have been to this ranch in uvalde at least once or twice a year my whole life. my kids have been able to go. it's one of my favorite places on earth. being a preacher's daughter and moving every couple years growing up, it's the closest thing i have to 'home'.

ok, so backtrack to november 1952 (not quite 1867, but still a pretty far-out life). my dad was 2 years old. here's an article published in the marfa paper:

"LITTLE GEORGE MIMMS SUTTON NOT LOST, JUST OUT WALKING

george mimms sutton, who will be three years old next february wasn't lost on the sutton ranch last friday afternoon. at least he would be hard to convince of that. it wouldn't be so hard to convince his parents, mr. and mrs. mimms sutton.

young george came into lunch last friday noon and wandered out again with a sandwich.

little boys aren't expected to check in very regularly right after getting something to eat - and especially if it might come on to be nap time, so for a time his absence was unmarked.

but when nap time did come and no george mimms, mr sutton was called from his work after a quick search around the house and ground by mrs. sutton brought no reply. he made a wider search still without result. it was the the middle of the afternoon.

so he phoned to marfa for help from the bloodhounds kept at the county jail. neighbors and friends began to gather too. little later sheriff barnett was called a start was made to organize a larger searching party. hamilton white flew down to the sutton place south of town to make an air search.

but about 4:30, mack humphreys found the young wanderer, just about the same time mr white located him from the air and the marfa searching party was disbanded.

by that time, the lad was three miles from home and truding capably along, escorted still by three faithful dogs. he'd been a good boy, he'd eaten all his lunch, and he had laid down at one time and had his nap - guarded all the time by his dogs.

he had no idea that he had been 'lost' and he was in no panic. but there were tear traces on his cheeks. and it was pretty nice just running into mr humphreys that far away from the house."

i can't imagine. what a far cry from my children's life. could be why i like this show so much?!

weekend update no. 7462518

long weekend but good and less stressful than most. the SOTA show friday night went well. we had a steady flow all night and sold a few. that's always nice. saturday, eva had a sleepover at a friend's house and paul and i thought it might be important to attend the global night commute since we only had one bambino for the evening and my friend carissa has said she was going... (and she did! check it here.) alas. we are self-absorbed and instead had vietnamese food and a nice bottle of wine at mai's.

sunday. ah yes sunday. paul and i had dinner with friends and friends-of-friends at queen of sheba in addison. boy has that place changed since it left lemmon avenue several years ago although the food was still absolutely divine. take note. we met to talk shop about cameras and art and meet new people. good times.

today was lovely. the kids and i ran many errands, including getting my super-awesome outfit for the La Reunion prom this upcoming saturday night. this week is all about prom; getting that balloon arch lined up and photographers set as well as the rotating cast of rock-star doormen we have lined up. seriously. we have some crazy amazing news to announce. if at all possible, please come and see what we're about. send me an email and i'll hook you with the evite.

anyhoo, i just got in from a nice long bike ride through the cliff with miller and i feel great. what i oughta do is ride like that every AM, although it would be scary how much i could get done in a day feeling like this.
