saturday night - what you should consider doing

Humanity : new paintings and sculpture by by jim frederick at his home-studio. it's actually tonight and tomorrow night, but i'm going by tomorrow night. also: the 500x show. i'm swinging by there too. oh6 is showing upstairs.

webbutton.jpg

and of course the undeniable records anniversary show at the double-wide: with a stellar line-up including the strange boys, theatre fire, the tahdahs, and the happy bullets. i'm sooooo there. sadly, without a lone star in my hand. although only till midnight thanks to the lenten loophole!

this just in from andrea: no strange boys!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! but i'm still going.

team evil

team evil.jpg

shot paul's new band tonight. www.teamevilrock.com
their first live gig is april 21 at bar of soap. with the happy bullets. a good time is clearly guarenteed.

two asides: the picture is totally unphotoshopped. and i had nothing to do with the name 'team evil'.

The Right Questions by Benjamin David Smith

my friend benji is screening his first feature film at the magnolia theatre in the west village tonight. the movie starts at 7:30, but it would be advisable to get there a little early because it will sell out.

plot? ripped straight from the press release i sent out: "The Right Questions unflinchingly explores the homeless subculture through the eyes of a graduate student Quazi, who is living homeless in Memphis as his senior thesis. As Quazi spirals deeper into this culture riddled with alcoholism, sorrow, drug addiction and fear, he meets a young street boy named Blaine who Quazi feels called to help. The story of Quazi and Blaine and the cast of characters unfolds in a narration exposing causes and effects of being homeless, ultimately revealing redemption. Although not rated, the film would have an R rating for violence, nudity, depicted drug use and strong language. It is being released under Smith’s own production company, Collective Neurosis."

benji wrote, directed, filmed, acted in, produced and editing this movie with practically no-budget when he was 26. and it's good. and inspiring to what his future will be. i've seen it twice and am looking forward to seeing it in a theatre. here's the trailer....

my other dear friend hal samples will have some of his artwork in the lobby of the theatre too. hal is this crazy beautiful soul who asks people to look at themselves in the face of homelessness in our city.

so come. tonight. and if it sells out, big deal, we'll do it again next tuesday.

i'm betting on the gorilla theory too

marchers.jpg

yay for those pesky sunset kids who drive slow and clog up jefferson by my house. although occasionally annoying, they won some points today for this. the kids and i watched the whole march. and we talked about it a bit over dinner.

eva at the park.jpg

in other news, my female offspring is simply beautiful. i'm so incredibly in love with her.

implosion + dreams

implosion.jpg

the implosion this morning downtown ft worth was cool, although it hit us by surprize about 15 minutes learly due to the impending rain. the brilliant scientist-types that set the explosives were dead on because practically 2 minutes after the building crumpled, it began to pour.

in other news, i'm baffled/slash/envious at people with 'dreams'.... a conversation in the car on the drive back to dallas from the implosion got me thinking. the person with whom i was speaking with has these two 'dreams' converging at the same time in her life. and they're specific. everything i've gotten myself wrapped up in, sucessful or not, hasn't been anything i could dream up. i never thought i'd have been a gallery owner. or running a community art project. or pulling off events like art conspiracy. i tend to just roll with it and if something comes up that i resonate with, i think, 'i can do that!' and then just do it. my visions tend to be a lot more broad, not specific and concrete, like some of my friends. i don't know whether to be jealous or not or just start meditating. help.

belle and sebastian and the new pornographers

new pornographers.jpg

the new pornographers rocked, although paul and i only caught the last 5 songs or so. oh, and we got schooled in what it means to have an 'all ages show'. that means it starts on time. ON TIME. the tickets clearly says '8pm'. they actually mean it at an all ages show. who knew?

belle and sebastian was truly amazing. i'm pleased as punch to have shelled out that much money for a touring concert. the granada was packed and we ran into numerous folks we know.

bandsone.jpg

paul and i are long time belle and sebastian fans, although we're only well versed in the first four albums or so. after that, we just sorta bob our heads. i suppose i heard enough. no, that's not true. i really wanted to hear judy and the dream of horses, among many others. just because the lyrics are so WEIRD. who am i kidding? most of their lyrics are witty and weird. but then that's what we all love about them, isn't it?

oh. and here's a link to the terry gross interview with stuart murdoch that we all seemed to miss.

Wednesday, March 15, 2006 @ 09:13 AM

oh yeah! i almost forgot! but not really.

we have tickets to belle and sebastian tonight at the granada. i cannot even begin to express my excitement for this show. i know. i know. the tickets were super expensive, but i figured it better to see them there as opposed to the nokia thatre. or else they'll just break up and we'd regret not going.

also: tonight's the full moon. croquet pics tomorrow.

party on a monday night.

jims studio.jpg

shot jim's studio earlier today after a massive corporate gig i hooked him up with. i'm working with him on an upcoming show in april for the SOTA building.

andrea and yvonne.jpg

then last night, we finally got to pull off the surprize party we'd been planning since like february for sweet yvonne. andrea made a lovely cake.

below? the decoy water cups. when yvonne walked in the door andrea and i were sitting at my dining room table drinking 'tea'.

decoy water cups.jpg

whe she turned the corner, 7 little kids with hats and horns and 8 parents yelled 'surprize!' it was awesome.

surprize.jpg

yvonne's had some year and needed a good time to unwind. it's hard to believe i've known her for 10 years. in fact, the bizarre part is that yvonne, lara (another guest), anna (yet another guest) and i all lived in europe together. at the same time. and there we all were with our kids 10 years later. it's like a movie, people. yay for yvonne. i'm so happy i still know her!

Tuesday, March 14, 2006 @ 09:40 AM

eva rocks.

eva: mama, i have a question.
me: ok, what is it?
eva: is time real? i mean, who's to say what time is?
me: uh, well. time IS because we say it is. and it relates ourselves to events.
eva: ok, so before there were people, there was no time?
me: you sure are going to love being a scientist when you grow up, watching the line between philosophy, art, theology and physics blur.
eva: what? i'm just seven!

in other news, she can balance on a two wheel bike now. she's growing up too fast.

happy bullets in black and white + the strange boys

this is that tower records in-store i had to miss due to a zillion receptions... it looks so cool in black and white. www.happybullets.com i was trying to weasel my way to austin for their thursday night performance... if only they played a little sooner i could pull it off. midnight's just too late to start and then get me back on the road to dallas. ouch. maybe 10 years ago i could have done it.

and here's my favorite boy band playing at avenue arts venue:

they're so cool, it pains me. www.thestrangeboys.com

Unused Paintings
George Lacy's work is all new
By Andrea Grimes

Art is all about coming up with something new with which to excite the imagination of one's audience. Thus, you'll have to forgive me if my mind is less than stimulated by an art exhibit titled New Paintings. I guess it's better than Paintings, Slightly Worn, but in VG Condition. Luckily, local artist George Lacy's uninventively titled showing is being put on by the Pigeon-Stone Project, which has a pretty cool name, even if it is likely to raise some eyebrows over at PETA. (Whatever, pigeons are annoying. Chunk those stones hard, kids.) Lacy says his paintings are about the "mystery of life as I experience it," if that's esoteric enough for you. The work is on display for free, Thursday through April 19 during regular theater hours at the Magnolia Theatre, 3699 McKinney Ave.

thank you dallas observer for the press. and come ya'll. it's my last official pigeon-stone project gig, although i'll still be curating the space, it just won't be PSP anymore. kah-raze-ee. RECEPTION 3.10.06 from 6:30 to 8:30.

dctv

i was on dctv last night to talk about/promote art conspiracy for dec 2006. it went well, considering it was my first time on television. uh, and everyone else first time, including the sweet girl who interviewed us. here we are doing a pre-interview:

preinterview.jpg

we recorded in studio a. ooooooo. ominous hand.

door to studio a.jpg

dctv studio a.jpg

it went well. the show is called 'art 101'. it will air who knows when but i hope to get a dvd recording soonish. the funny part was when i walked up and who else was standing out front but ole stephen ruiz of zygote. HA! such a tiny tiny world. espesh in dallas DIY circles.

weekend pics

allgoodcafe.jpg

i love math and salim nourallah at all good cafe was low-key and fun to witness. (what kind of word choice is witness? my gosh.)

tunnel.jpg

picture takin' with miller was fun too. i shot film. miller shot with my nikon. originally i had a date with billy but he cancelled at the last minute. (we're rescheduling, dude. i'm lookin' at you.) so i called a few friends before finding daniel free. the places i want to go rarely are appropriate to go to alone. i found a mama dog and her two puppitos five feet in either direction that were too weak to make it to her. so i put them both in a pile and called paul for the moral and ethical decision on whether to leave them or take them home. he said they had the same shot either way. and to leave them. so leave them we did. picture above and below by daniel. top pic by me.

puppy.jpg

it was hard though. they were awfully cute.

gallery non-hop. lith printing.

so there were several art openings this weekend i skipped. didn't necessarily want to, but wasn't up for the schmooze part. one was at barry whistler, who incidentally, i seem to run into everywhere but we've never had a conversation. he was showing aquaintance and occasional mentor, john pomara. i'm sure the work was amazing. a neighbor and long-time collector in my neighborhood has one of his pieces and i was just marveling last night at it. i'm DYING to talk process with pomara, but have yet to be somewhere quiet and not mid-conversation about something else and there's at least a thousand people around.

one of the other big shows i missed was the grand opening of road agent, conviniently enough located right next door to barry whistler. i was curious to go, check out the space, an artist i no nothing about and see what kind of crowd came out. which brings me to my point.

the crowd. i wasn't up for it.

in other news, i have to lith print early this next week. a buyer's print was scratched during a recent mailing and she needs it reprinted. i'm (almost) jittery and nervous... going to visit an old glove. it'll be stiff at first, but i know everything i love about it will come flooding back. it's been a year.

more lenten sacrifice

going vegan hasn't been so bad. giving up alcohol will soon prove to be a challenge, i think. but here's the big one: i'm giving up self-doubt too. all of it: moment by moment. when that voice talks... 'thanks for sharing, but no thanks'

i.
am.
so.
over.
it.

i look forward to re-evaluating my relationship with self-doubt in 38 days. examining what's been in it for me to have it. 'cause i'm sure getting something out of it right now.

life is slowing down. and i like it.

green tea.
to the symphony with the kids.
thai food for lunch.
errands.
school.
more and more green tea.
planting seedlings.
barbeque tofu cooking in the oven.
a meeting later.
and potentially the happy bullets at the double wide.
(yvonne and i will drink soda or something)
