the longest weekend ever.
i'm back! yay!
friday night: the joey seeman reception was amazing. a few sales and a great crowd. i'd post a picture, except the memory card to my digital camera fell out after i dropped the thing and the latch came loose. (trust me, i have retraced my steps numerous times) after the reception.... to the cosmic cup and purgatory.
saturday night: the slumber party! eva had several little friends over for movies and pizzas and fake tattoos. at one point, i seriously had the impression that paul and i were out numbered and if they could organize amongst themselves, we'd have been had. the kids partied pretty late and awoke on sunday morning no later than 6:45 AM. we let them run wild for a bit before we finally grumbled out of bed.
sunday: the family party! my whole family and paul's whole family came over to celebrate eva and my dad's birthdays. then we sat up and watched the oscars and lamented the fact that we haven't seen hardly any movies.
glad monday is here. nyddia and i got a lot done today, organizationally. we make huge strides every day and are accomplishing more together than either one of us could separately. and we both know it.

happy birthday eva
eva is six today. i can hardly believe it. she's literally grown up in front of our eyes. i know every last parent on the planet must say this, but i remember her being a tiny baby! vividly. the whole time i was pregnant with her, paul and i kept asking each other, "what are we going to do with a baby, we don't know anything about babies." i don't think i'd even changed a nappy before miss eva.
everyone who knows eva, knows she's smart beyonnd her years and charming and just so funny to be around. she's loving with her brother. she loves music and books and making things with her hands. she's just great. i adore her.
the slumber party is tomorrow. i think we might be insane. six little kids because she is six. complete with pizza and movies. needless to say, she's ecstatic.

reggae dub and red stripe. hell yeah.

nieto fine art
tonight i photographed one of those semi-high-profile-art-events.... not like IR Gallery... as in I can't show off the tattoo and I sure as hell can't be the star-diva. Just the photographer, hired help. Great fun though. Some of Nyddia and mine's favorite Dallas artists were showing tonight at Nieto Fine Art and of course they know I love their work. Nyddia took this picture of Patrick Rhodes and me. He'll be showing new work in March at IR Gallery. how cool is that?
and here's what happens when Nyddia and I get bored and the event is over and I still have shots to kill:

and later at nikita, dallas' most packed after hours establishments:

yeah, i have a great job.

10 theory
the tenth song on most cd's is typically one of the best.
case in point: Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band: the tenth song is Lovely Rita.

adventures in v-day
hallmark holidays don't do it for me. love happens year round in our house. :)
anyhoo, today nyddia, stephen lapthisophon and i spent the day photographing, picnicing, talking, checking out grant's show for this weekend..... i actually had a great time. felt like i was ditching school or something. we even got stopped by the dart cops and everything trying to make our way to the train tracks.
rufus, our dart cop was incredibly nice and even walked out to the tracks with us.
i keep trying upload this other awesome picture i took of nyddia's heels next to the cop car, but it won't load for some reason. alas. you'll have to take my word for it: it's funny.

another continental teaser
another nic picture. i printed a few up last night for him. the scary part is i haven't touched the other artists' pics yet. i haven't even shot all the work for the show yet. ack. not a complaint, just an observation. i plan on doing some magical lith juice on about 25 of these artists' studio photographs..... i always print up proofs of the one i actually might want to lith and i don't know if i'm using this one or not. maybe.

christo and jeanne-claude
i don't watch much tv, but i saw a blurb about a story airing tonight on nightline featuring the gates and christo and jeanne-claude and thought i might tune in. too bad our nyc gallery trip is out. there was a chance we were going to get to see it. bummer. this is the kind of thing that when you look at it, you can almost feel. like closing your eyes and being on the very top of a mountain.

super bowl party
it's great being in a circle of people that seriously don't care about football in the same way that we don't. the party we went to..... kids ran around wild, lots of food and beer, the game was on, but uh, no one was watching. a small crowd gathered when paul mccartney played, but other than that groups of people just sat on the porch and talked while erykah badu played in the kitchen....
it's funny, no one even knew who was playing. no one. (i know, because i kept asking, like that bit of 'trivia' would help in in a conversation tomorrow or something) new-england-something-or-other-maybe?? here's the thing: we all just want to have a sense of community and have tonight not be like any other sunday night. everyone else in the country is having a great time and partying and getting together.... why can't we? the game being on was simply obligatory.... so just in case sir paul had a wardrobe malfunction, we would know about it.

excerpt
excerpt from Air Guitar by Dave Hickey.....
"First: Art is not a commodity. It has no intrinsic value or staple application. Corn is a commodity, and so is long-distance service, since the operative difference between bushels of corn and minutes of long-distance service is the price. Price distinguishes commodities that are otherwise similar and destabilizes the market, whereas price likens works of art that are dissimilar and stabilzes the market. When I trade a work by Kenny Price for a work by John Baldessari, as I did once, I am not conducting a commodity transaction, I am hopefully engaging in a subtle negotiation of analogous social value.
Second: Art and money never touch. They exist in parallel universes of value at comprable levels of cultural generalization: Art does nothing to money but translate it. Money does nothing to art but facilitate its dissemination and buy the occasional box of Wheaties for the artist or art dealer. Thus, when you trade a piece of green paper with a picture on it, signed by a bureaucrat, for a piece of white paper with a picture on it, signed by an artist, you haven't bought anything, since neither piece of paper is worth anything. You have translated your investment and your faith from one universe to another."
later....
"Money is the emblem of the risks you're willing to take to have a say in the way something looks. If you don't take risks, if you only confirm the prescience of previous investors, you aquire no power, create no constituancies, and have no effect. ... In order to have any say at all, then, one must take risks and do so persuasively, and continue to do so."
anybody want to buy me the book? the gallery address is fine for shipping. link.

ok, i finally watched the movie
friday night lights. was it really like that? uh, i guess. some things were so right on it was ridiculous. the mania? yeah, it was really like that. the graveling girls giving their football players sweets? yep. the packed stadium? indeed. the solemn drama in the field house before games? i have no idea, but probably.
some things were just so wrong, it irked me everytime i saw them..... things like the sign with all the championships listed on it.... that thing wasn't at ratliff. it was at the school, over the marching band practice area. but whatever. further, the in-town rivalry between permian and odessa high school wasn't touched on at all. those poor kids from ohs. slighted once again. tsk-tsk.
my experience was one of the lone band girl, standing there looking all confused about the game and half-heartedly cheering whenever something good happened. football eludes me completely: i have no idea what a 'first down' is or any of that stuff. i don't even know enough to say i don't know what something is. i only dated a football player my sophomore year and he was a senior. super cute too. sometime i'll write about the time he asked me out, i swear it happened in slow motion. none of the football guys my age would have anything to do with me, which sucked because i secretly wanted to be popular and know about football and such. guess it wasn't in my cards. wahoo!
i liked the movie, i suppose, but only because i went to that school. (which is so freakin' bizarre) this is turning out to be a terrible review of a mildly terrible movie. fitting, i guess.
{disclaimer: i was born in odessa and moved away at age 5 or so. lived many many places and ended up back in odessa for 10-12 grades, just in time to graduate high school with kids i was in pre-k with. i can't with any good conscious claim odessa as my home, thank god, but i lived there long enough to grasp at a point of view. if i get time, i'll scan in my quote from my senior year book. gawd, it's funny.}
