movie review : rocket science

so the new movie rocket science is cute. i liked it. it's well done and funny and i'm impressed this is someone's first go at a decent-sized budget movie. easy to criticize, but equally easy to like. the lead, reece thompson, does a killer stutter. and the fast-talking debaters are stellar. oh, and there's an awesome cello throwing scene that hit a little close to home. {i chuckled out loud anyway}

i like the way it ends the best. the easy routes would have been to go for the horrific or the cheesy feel-good paths, but director jeffrey blitz (same dude who did the documentary spellbound) went for the real ending instead - the one that you could buy and take home and unwrap and smile about. i had many conversations with folks in the movie and folks producing it. it's a world i don't know much about - learned a lot. plus, new york flat out doesn't suck. and meeting folks like eef barzelay (who did the sound track) and his super funny wife doesn't suck either!

opens friday, august 17 in dallas.
